Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Arima Onsen

A hot spring located in Kobe, Hyogo. It is considered one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan and appears in various literary works such as the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) and Makura no Soshi (The Pillow Book). It has been loved by many people since ancient times, and authorities of the time such as FUJIWARA no Yorimichi, ASHIKAGA Yoshimitsu, and TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi often visited here to recuperate in the hot springs. It was widely known as it was introduced with the highest rank in the Onsen Banzuke, a ranking of hot springs published in the Edo period.
