Mt. Asama
One of the most active volcanoes in Japan, lying between Nagano and Gunma. 2,568 meters above sea level. It was once an object of mountain worship and visited by many people. It has been erupting repeatedly for more than 100,000 years, with the most recent large-scale eruption occurring in 1783. The Asama Volcano Observatory, Japan's first volcano observatory, was established in 1911.
