Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Zenkoji Temple

A temple located in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. It is said to have been founded about 1,400 years ago, and its principal object of worship is the Ikko-Sanzon Amida Nyorai, said to be the oldest Buddhist statue in Japan. During the Edo period, it became widely worshipped all over Japan, and there were sayings such as "visit Zenkoji Temple at least once in your life" and "visit Zenkoji Temple pulled by an ox". The main hall, rebuilt in 1707, is designated as a National Treasure. The Sanmon Gate, Sutra Repository, and other buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
