Kasugataisha Shrine
A shrine located at the foot of Mt. Kasuga (also known as Mt. Mikasa) in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. It is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. It was built in the Nara period to pray for the protection of the capital Heijo-kyo and for the prosperity of the people. The imperial family, aristocrats, and common people were deeply devoted to this shrine and dedicated many treasures and lanterns to it. Deer are regarded as messengers of the gods.
