Nara
A city in northern Nara Prefecture. In 710, the capital Heijo-kyo was established and the city became a political center. Later, the Kasugataisha Shrine, Kofukuji Temple, Todaiji Temple, and other shrines and temples flourished with the worship of the aristocrats, and the city developed as a gate town of these temples. In the Edo period, more and more common people began to visit these temples, and the industries of writing brushes and ink sticks developed. Many old shrines, temples and cultural assets remain.
