Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Koyasan

Koyasan (Mt. Koya), located in northeastern Wakayama Prefecture, is a sacred site of esoteric Shingon Buddhism, founded by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in the early Heian period. The entirety of Koyasan is considered the grounds of the Kongobuji Temple, the head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, and more than 100 temples are located here. They are registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range".
