Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Okama

A circular crater lake surrounded by three mountains, located near the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. This lake is also called "Goshiki-ko" or "Goshiki-numa" (meaning "five-colored lake" or "five-colored swamp"), as its color changes depending on how the light hits it. Together with the “snow monsters” (frozen trees), it has become a symbol of Zao.
