Toshogu Shrine

A shrine dedicated to TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate. Tokugawa Ieyasu died in Sumpu in 1616 and was buried at Mt. Kunouzan according to his will. The following year, he was moved to Nikko and enshrined there. In 1645, the shrine was given a greater title and become known as Toshogu. The Yomeimon Gate, a National Treasure, is well-known.
