Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Zoshigaya

Located on the west side of Gokoku-ji Temple. There are several theories on the origin of the area name including one that says it was from a zoshiki (minor official) from the imperial court during the Period of Northern and Southern Dynasties settled in the area. The Kishimonjin Hall, located outside the grounds of Homyo-ji Temple, was worshipped as a god of childbirth and child-rearing. Nishiki-e often depicted the restaurants in front of the Kishimonjin-mon Gate and people holding Susukimimizuku (Susuki grass horned owl toy) which were sold within the temple grounds.
