Yumeji-style beauty

These paintings are by TAKEHISA Yumeji, who is often cited as a leading proponent of "Taisho romanticism." Many of his paintings of women with large, melancholy eyes were modeled after his first wife, Tamaki, and this type of "Yumeji-style beauty" had a major influence on the world of art.

His works show the influence of Art Nouveau, which was popular in the late 1890s, as well as the "Edo style" and "exotic style" of art that influenced cultural figures during the late Meiji and early Taisho eras.
