Kumano
Southeastern area of the Kii Mountain Range. Since ancient times, people have worshipped the area as a sacred site. Kumano Sanzan (the three grand shrines of Kumano: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha) and other shrines of mountain asceticism are located in the mountains and are connected by Kumano Kodo (the ancient pilgrimage routes of Kumano). It is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range".
