Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Osorezan (Mt. Osore)

Located on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, Osorezan is the collective name for the outer rim of Lake Uzoriyama and the surrounding volcanoes. Osorezan is considered one of the three most sacred mountains in Japan and the Osorezan Bodaiji Temple, which is said to have been founded by Ennin in 862, is located here. Osorezan is famous for "Itako no Kuchiyose" (mediums summoning spirits).
