Shimonoseki
A city located on the west end of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It has long flourished as an important port for marine transportation and trade with Kyushu, China, and Korea. In the Edo period, it became a transit point for westbound shipping routes, and flourished as a market for rice and marine products. After the Meiji period, it developed industries such as deep-sea fishing, shipbuilding, chemicals, and suburban agriculture.
