Yawata Steel Works
In 1897, construction of the Yawata Steel Works was begun by German engineers who had been invited to Japan, and operations began in 1901. It was Japan’s first government-operated steel works that handled everything from iron production to steel production. Reparations from the Sino-Japanese War were used to pay for the construction of the steel works. Registered as a World Culture Heritage Site in 2015.
