Otaru
Otaru is located in western Hokkaido. As an outport for Sapporo, Otaru flourished especially during the Meiji and Taisho periods. The Otaru Canal, completed in 1923, served as a hub for cargo handling, and Temiya in the city was the base of the government-run Horonai Railway, the first railroad line opened in Hokkaido.
