Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Shuzenji

A place name in the northern part of Izu, Shizuoka. Shuzenji Temple, the origin of the name, is said to have been founded by Kukai in 807. Shuzenji Hot Spring is said to have originated from Tokko no Yu, which Kukai is said to have caused the waters to spring forth in the same year, and has been popular as a therapeutic hot spring spot for a long time. It is also the location of Shuzenji Nikki (Shuzenji Diary) by NATSUME Soseki and Shuzenji Monogatari (The Tale of Shuzenji) by OKAMOTO Kido.
