Izu
Izu Peninsula is the easternmost part of Shizuoka Prefecture. Shimoda Port was opened in 1854 as a result of the Treaty of Peace and Amity between Japan and the United States. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, built around the same time, were registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2015 as one of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining". Hot spring resorts such as Atami and Ito are gathered there, and it became the location of many works, such as Izu no Odoriko (The Izu Dancer) by KAWABATA Yasunari.
