Saigoku 33 sho junrei gakan (A picture album of the thirty-three pilgrimage places of the Western Provinces)

NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu painted the 33 sacred sites of the Kannon faith scattered throughout the six prefectures of the Kinki region and the Gifu Prefecture in the Saigoku 33 sho junrei gakan (A picture album of the thirty-three pilgrimage places of the Western Provinces). The 33 is referring to the 33 transformations of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) to save all living things, as described in the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Sutra on the Lotus of the Marvelous Law, Vol 25 (Kannon Sutra).
Nakazawa's subjects were local places of interest and Buddhist temples that retain the atmosphere of the Edo and Meiji periods. He traveled not only to famous sightseeing spots but also to remote mountainous areas and coastal areas, and painted many pictures of casual scenery and the beauty of Japan as it changes from season to season. One such work is Saigoku 33 sho junrei gakan, which was published in 1925. Other works include Nihon Taikan and Nihon Meisho Shasei.
